Alphons Mucha was born on the 24th of July 1860 in Ivanice, years back then it was southern Moravia. He left home for Vienna at the age of seventeen in order to work as a scene painter at the Ringtheater. He lost his job when the theater burnt down but quite soon he found a place of employment at the castle belonging to the wealthy Count Khuen who valued Alphon Mucha’s work highly and became his patron. Thanks to him Mucha was able to start his education at the Munich Art Academy. But some time later the Count ceased to pay the bills and the artist had to earn his living performing some illustrations of his own. He had a great number of sketches and drawings. At this point he becomes a well-known artist even in Paris. ‘Le style Mucha” was the talk of Paris and everybody knew him as a man with arabesque-like hair framing a female profile. Shortly before the outbreak of World War 1 Mucha returned to his native Czechoslovakia. He kept working until the last days of his life. He died in Prague on the 14th of July.
